Book Review: A Dangerous Act of Kindness

By | July 10, 2019

A Dangerous Act of Kindness by LP Fergusson was chosen for the Big Library Read for the period, June 17, 2019 to July 1, 2019. The novel is a work of historical fiction as well as a romance. The story is set in England during and after World War II from the years 1939 to 1951. A Dangerous Act of Kindness is compelling.

In A Dangerous Act of Kindness, the two main characters, Millie and Lukas, become lovers during wartime in England. Lukas, a German pilot, was shot out of the sky. He lands in a farming village. Lukas makes his way onto Millie’s farm where she finds him injured. Millie, a widow with an extreme guilt over her husband’s death, decides to help Lukas recover from his injury rather than turn him over to authorities. If British authorities find out what Millie did, she could be killed. The plot thickens as supporting characters invade Millie’s privacy and thus, threaten to expose Millie and Lukas’s intimate relationship, putting Millie’s life at risk.

Millie and Lukas are not perfect. Thus, Fergusson creates room for character growth through their imperfections and/or poor decisions. The story is divided into sections by year. The book begins in 1939 and ends in 1951. However, the story skips a few years. What happened to Millie, Lukas, and some of the supporting characters during the missing time periods? These mysteries can only be answered in a sequel. Thus, readers will be left wanting more.

During the period June 17, 2019 to July 1, 2019, readers discussed A Dangerous Act of Kindness on the Big Library Read website. Some readers expressed desires to see this novel made into a movie. Other readers would like LP Fergusson to write a sequel. LP Fergusson joined at least one discussion thread to respond to reader inquiries. Fergusson would also like to see A Dangerous Act of Kindness made into a movie as well, but there were no current plans to do so. Furthermore, Fergusson confirmed that she has no current plans to write a sequel.

The Big Library Read is a global e-book club. Between June 17, 2019 and July 1, 2019, library patrons from all over the world borrowed a digital copy of A Dangerous Act of Kindness through OverDrive without having to wait for a copy. I used the Kindle app to read this book, but the Big Library Read website indicates that readers can read or listen to e-books on their cell phones via the Libby app as well. LP Fergusson was interviewed about her e-book, A Dangerous Act of Kindness, by Professional Book Nerds for the Big Library Read. You can listen to the podcast interview with LP Fergusson by Professional Book Nerds in episode #346. You can find a link to that podcast below. Listening to the interview before reading the novel can help provide context for the story.

I highly recommend this book for adults and adult book clubs, because A Dangerous Act of Kindness provokes controversy. What would you do if you found an enemy pilot or soldier on your property? Would you help him or her? Would you have engaged in an intimate relationship with an enemy pilot or soldier during wartime? Do you think Millie did the right thing by helping Lukas? Read the book on your own or together with your book club. A Dangerous Act of Kindness will give you and your friends plenty to talk about.
